Cold LinkedIn Message Templates That Actually Get Replies

Reply rates on LinkedIn vary enormously by message quality. These templates, and the reasoning behind each one, are built around what consistently performs.

LinkedIn reply rates average around 10.3 percent across the platform, but well-targeted, well-written sequences regularly outperform that by a wide margin, while generic templated blasts fall well below it. The difference is rarely the tool. It is almost always the message.

What every effective message has in common

Connection request template

Template "Hi [First Name], saw your work on [specific project, post, or company update]. I work with [role/industry] teams on [relevant topic], thought it would be worth connecting."

This works because it references something real and specific rather than a generic reason, and it does not ask for anything yet. The only goal of this message is the connection itself.

First follow-up (after connection is accepted)

Template "Thanks for connecting, [First Name]. Quick context on why I reached out: [one sentence on the specific problem or opportunity you help with]. Curious whether that's something on your radar right now, no pressure either way."

This introduces the actual reason for outreach without pushing for a meeting immediately. The "no pressure either way" line lowers resistance and tends to increase response rate, since it signals a real conversation rather than a scripted pitch.

Second follow-up (if no response after 4 to 6 days)

Template "Circling back in case this got buried, [First Name]. If [specific topic] isn't a priority right now, no worries at all. If it is, happy to share how we've approached it for similar teams."

Most replies come from the second or third touch, not the first. This message stays low-pressure while giving one more concrete reason to respond.

Meeting-request message (once there is genuine interest)

Template "Great, glad it's relevant. Would a short 15-minute call make sense to see if there's a fit? Happy to work around your schedule, here's a link if it's easier: [scheduling link]."

Keep this short. By this point the prospect has already shown interest, so the only job of this message is to remove friction from booking time.

What to avoid

Avoid sending the exact same message to hundreds of prospects with no variation, since it both underperforms and increases account risk. Avoid pitching in the first message. And avoid long paragraphs. On LinkedIn specifically, shorter messages consistently outperform longer ones, especially on mobile, where a large share of replies happen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good LinkedIn reply rate?

The platform-wide average sits around 10.3%. Well-targeted, personalized sequences regularly reach 15% or higher, while generic templated blasts sent to broad lists often fall to 3 to 5%. Role matters too: HR and talent acquisition contacts reply at roughly 12%, compared to 7% for C-level and VP-level titles.

How long should a cold LinkedIn message be?

Keep it to 2 to 3 sentences for a first touch. Messages under 400 characters see up to 22% more replies than longer ones, and a large share of replies happen on mobile, where long paragraphs get skipped.

Does personalizing a connection request actually matter?

Yes, significantly. A connection request with a short, specific, personalized note sees roughly a 9.4% acceptance rate, compared to about 5.4% for a blank request with no note at all.
